Edith L. Tiempo was a Filipino poet, fiction writer, teacher and literary critic known for doing literary works in english. "She is known for the littlest fellow" and "Bonsai". She is considered as one of the finest Filipino writers in English whose works are characterized by a remarkable fusion of style and substance, of craftsmanship and insight.

She was born on 22 April 1919 in Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya. She became the first International Fellow from the Philippines for poetry at the prestigious Iowa Writer’s Workshop in the United States which dated back in 1947. It was innovative to have Edith enter the Iowa workshop. She was named as a National Artist, as well as being granted the title of "The Gawad Pambansang Alagad ni Balagtas" in 1988. She has made novels such as "A blade of fern (1978)" which is one of her oldest works with the story about a little mining village of Nibucal in the southern Philippines which focused on the problems of survival among the miners' way of living. 





In 1999, She was conferred the National Artist Award which was an order bestowed by the Philippines on Filipinos who have made significant contributions to the development of Philippine art. The Order is administered by the Cultural Center of the Philippines by honor of President Ferdinand Marcos. 


The state of Honor of the order is considered the Highest given to individuals who have done things for their country in the artistic state. People who would have the honor or potential candidates would go to the malacanang palace where the president would give them the insignia of the Order which is a medal and a pin. One of her honors as well was the Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards Literature, Cultural Center of the Philippines in 1979, she was first place in novel, and finally the Gawad Pambansang Alagad ni Balagtas in 1988. Edith Lopez Tiempo, a national artist in Literature, died in August 21, 2011. But let it not stop her from spreading her legacy as a Filipino writer.
